Event history
The 2009 Cabo Verde PWA World Cup was born as a dream by windsurf legend, Josh Angulo, who fell in Love with Cabo Verde, Ponta Preta and the people of Cabo Verde in his first visit in January of 1998. Josh’s love affair of riding the perfect waves at Ponta Preta, many times alone, formed into a dream of realizing and winning a World Championship event in Cabo Verde. As Josh was and currently is a full time professional windsurfer, he had yet to share with his new found friends and family that extent of what this windsurfing was about and dreamed of showing Cabo Verde to the world and bringing the world to Cabo Verde. His dreams of competing against the best windsurfers in the world at the best spot in the world finally became a reality in 2007.
In the spring of 2006, Josh officially traded in his homeland representation of USA on his sail with sail number US-11, to compete under his adopted home of Cabo Verde under sail number CV-1. After winning two Championship events in Hawaii under the CV-1 number and at the same time carrying the colors of national airlines TACV on his sail, Josh finally got his foot in the door with Cabo Verde Investimentos, the organizing body for the event and the government branch, whom without, the event would not be possible. Then president, Victor Fidalgo, took the initiative together with his trusted team of advisers and together with the Camara do Sal and head sponsors BCA and Garantia, put on what was arguably the best event in windsurfing history. The 10-12 foot waves and 25 knot winds came together during the event and showed the world that Ponta Preta truly is the best spot on the planet. Young hotshot from Brazil, Kauli Seadi, put on an exceptional show in the first elimination and sat in 1st place for a day. The next day saw a fairytale ending, when in front of a maximum home crowd of people, pumping waves, pumping winds, music and vibes, Josh Angulo came from behind to defeat Kauli Seadi two times , thus clinching the title, and achieving the dream and the vision that had been sown many years prior.
2008
2008 sees a few political changes on the scene. Victor Fidalgo, the birth father, of the Cabo Verde event decides to leave office for some different ventures. The event looks like it was in jeopardy, but the harmonious changeover of office between Victor Fidalgo and new CI president Alexander Fontes shows clearly that windsurfing in Cabo Verde is important to our country and, ever more importantly shows the clear political stability and consistency in Cabo Verde. Contracts got signed with the PWA and SAL 2008 grows another year. This year its time for World Champion Kauli Seadi to shine and in tricky conditions, with waves breaking practically, on the rocks, Kauli’s new school style takes the title and sets a new level.
2009
President of CI, Alexander Fontes, visionary ways is taking the Cabo Verde World Championships to a whole new level. This year will see the inclusion of the Ponta Preta “mini-city” complete with daily and nightly entertainment, beach football and beach volleyball tournament, great food, drinks, souvenirs and best of all, a chance to bring together friends and family with visitors alike to witness the worlds best windsurfers at the best spot In the world… enjoy!
