Surf spots

Surf spots map1. Canoa
Close to Rife and inside Murdeira’s bay, Canoa is the easy and safe spot of Sal. Wind is side/side off, waves are small and easy to surf, no difficult shore break. This easy riding spot is ideal for all riders.

2. Ponta Preta
Ponta Preta is Josh Angulo’s playground! For him and for many others riders - famous or not - this is one of the very best windsurfing place of the planet! If ocean swell is coming from the west, the waves will build up at Ponta Preta higher than anywhere on the island. The wave can be pretty big (up to 5 meters). It starts breaking very far from the beach, rolls glassy on a few hundred meters and finishes as a big shore break on the white sand. Most of the time, the wind is side-offshore and coming from the right.

Don’t try it if you’re not feeling confident in big waves combined with light (and sometimes gusty) wind! Any sailing mistake can leads you directly in the black rocks. But this it is the place where you can find the best surfing vibe, even as a witness standing on the beach.

3. Albatros (Ponta Leme)
Located close to the fine hotels and residences of Santa Maria, this is also an easy spot. Most of the time, water is flat and wind is constant and coming from the left, side-shore or side-offshore. When the swell is south, it creates a long wave, safe and easy to ride. In case of problem, zodiac rescue is possible.

4. Santa Maria
This spot is located at the East of the bay of Santa Maria, but it’s possible to start from Albatros beach. The wind is side-shore to side-onshore. The wave is easy to ride, but far from the point, there’s a risk of strong current, windless and big wind swell.

5. Salinas (Kite Beach)
Kitebeach is the best kitesurfing place of Sal. The spot is only 5 minutes driving from the center of Santa Maria. This is an easy spot, good for learning: the beach is very long so the spot is never too crowded, there’s no dangerous currents, the coral reef creates an easy wave for safe wave riding. The wind is side-shore to side onshore, coming from the left and steady most of the time.

6. Ali Baba
A rare jewel that is considered by all visitors to be one of the most perfect waves in the World. Comparable waves such as J-Bay in south Africa have had successful communities and economies built around such a treasure as Ali Baba. The “patrimnio” that Ali Baba brings to Cabo Verde compares only to that of Ponta Preta and the wind corridor that serves Ponta Leme and Santa Maria Bay.
